sorry to say i think there will be expansion at stansted (privately owned soon). One reason is because stansted and gatwick has to be sold by BAA whether they get the 3rd runway or not.
Sorry to say stansted is 100% likely to get expansion,from what i here from locals in the area the runway was built some years ago and is covered by grass.
Thats not to say this will be the main runway as i do not know the length of it (11,000 ft is needed).
To those who live in the area i am sorry but yu knew there was a major airport there and because like many thousands of esex residents who use londons airports you have only yourselves to blame for the noise increase.
Stansted has been a major airport like gatwick for over 30 years.
Sounds as if its the not in my backyard ! well it is in your backyard.
By the way the southend corporation intend to build a new runway at soundend (they own southend airport).

So if the residents of essex want to fly abroad for there holidays then they have to put up with the inconvenice of stansted expansion.
bloody tough aint it. by the way i have not even got a passport or flown anywhere in 17 years

and your point flash??? Just because you dont fly it dont mean you dont get the benifits of the airports which there are many. Think of how many people would get work because of this. The amount of extra jobs in the airport it's self. ect ect.

any runway can be the main one or any given day as for taking off wind direction is a massive factor, not so much when landing.

After watching them Saturday coming into land against that wind......sod being up there in any wind direction!!!

i went to sweden with ryan air and the captain said on the tanoy "we have just gone supersonic with a 200 mile wind behind us and this has never happened to me or my co-pilot" and i thought oh crap or something like that.

it took under an hr to get there and 2 1/2 to get back. i read in the mail
that even if a car does 100.000 miles it is still less fuel than a plane flying to tenerife. as the world is only 28,800 miles wide at the equator

But, they have always planned to expand, the A130 was all done for it in prep. And, there are a few planned monster quarrys in the fairly local area. Roxwell is a planned site, and it will be right next to Newlands Hall fishery. To build the runway and all that goes with it will require massive amount of stone, and as Stansted is only 1/2 hour from Roxwell, I would not be supprised if it got the go ahead.

there has been varies rumours locally about the "grass runway".

In stansted case they have got to do something very quickly to try and allie peoples fears over heathrow .

Stansted southend will get new runways and terminals gatwick now with new owners (they own london city) will get the long over due airport.
Luton again there is likely to be some sort of expansion before 2012 probably not a new runway.
the rule of thumb is that the max a airport can expand on a single runway is 150 to 180,000 .
This could mean stansted could expand with just a new terminal, but there lies a problem , amy new owners of stansted would not buy the airport unless there was certain govt agreements on expansion.
So in my opinion the govt (new govt) would have already given the nod, the local councils will probably not have any say on this whatsoever.
Its what best for all in the comunity ! not the people who live under the flightpath and offcourse more well needed jobs in the area.
i wonder if anyone notice the roundabout outside great dunmow the goes to nowhere . i gather this is intended for the stansted expansion later
