Hi, I am looking to have a days fishing over Southminster. I have never fished it before, so was looking for some advice as to the best pits to fish. Mainly is any pit better for larger carp than the others and are any of the pits particularly good for tench? Many thanks in advance!

Dave

Pit 6 isnt as promising as it sounds Sad I fished it very late last season feb/march and did pretty well, averaged a couple fish a session, a few runs and loads of silvers. On one day two blokes had out probably a dozen carp each just using things like corn, meat and pellet, so it shows what a better angler (compared to me :P) can achieve. But i fished it a few weeks back and no such fun im afraid. Had a nice scrapper of a carp but only 4 or 5lb, good fight but that was the only carp run (On corn if you're interested) and only had a dozen or so silvers compared with 30+ last season.

Make of that what you will, while i was there last month others were catching, a family of 3 or 4 anglers had 2 or 3 fish each, biggest about 18lb i think. Seems odd, i was expecting a lot more of pit 6 but its not to be at the moment i fear.

If you go to 6 anyway try floating bread as the light goes, did the trick often in the colder months, try it about 8-9pm if you're there that late, throw some freebies out to the middle of the big end (to the right) and watch the water. You'll more than likely see a few cruising. Just watch the birds. No carp is worth the danger of hooking a bird!

Good luck though!

Hi and welcome

pits 1, 3 & 6 have the bigger heads of larger carp but the others can throw up a few surprises. pit 8 is always worth a bash too but dont get too close to the reeds.

pit 1 is fishing best atm, 3 & 6 are slower than usual for this time of year but not fish-less.

I've been hearing various reports on Southminster Pit 1 that hardly any carp have come out recently...is this correct?

Is there any reason for this apart from probably the weather?

Last time I fished pit 1 almost every run was a Bream. I said that next time I fish pit 1 it will be with my pole.

fished it a couple of weekends ago when the weather was a bit milder on pit 1, on the island, only a short 6hr session, had 1 run but nothing graced the bank:-(
A few fish showing along the railway bank and left hand corner,

i did cast to the showing fish but none took the bait. A nice fish crashed out in the small bay on left as you walk onto the island my son put his rod out in the bay and he blanked as well.

In winter I always fish the corners.ifs
Sunny you can fish in water 3ft deep ev en if there has been a heavy frost.this works well on 3 and 8 with a single grain of corn. Watch out on 3 there is a certain individual who takes no pleasure in watching you land a barney rubble when there is still frost on the ground.
