In the end the buyer either walks in or out of a particular shop.
many shops are now takeing work experience guys who may not be the best people to serve you.(some do not want to be there and are complete prats and some are dedicated anglers) But a manager is should be ?aware of stock that does not walk out of the store (legally) within a short time. Its a fine balance between what to stock and what sells and does not sell. it can also be seasonal the traditional season for coarse fishing is between march and end of november then it dies a death. I who fish over 100 times a year tend to cut down my fishing big time in the winter. But what i do is to buy my fishing gear in the winter months when i know i can get better deals (mainly of carp orientated gear ) rather than have a big buy in the spring. In the last 2 months i have bought 10 items mainly end type tackle but have bought a JVC cocoon holdal ,Diawa backpack 40 litres and a shakespeare carryall. allready for the season to come !
As said before Shops cannot complete ebay but ebay cannot give the buyer expert advice and its this that the potential customer wants as much as a good buy. Maybe shop managers (think this covers all shops not just tackle shops) should think of this before complaining about lack of sales and low profits.

When Dave Potter ran the shop, most of the staff were very knowledgable, but that soon changed...........

Last time I went in there I had a barney with a bloke who obviously knew nothing about the way lure rods are rated, insisted that an ML (medium light) was exactly the same as a MH (medium heavy) - Not been back since

It's been my experience that most of these Fishing tackle Warehouses are run by idiots and are only interested in the dosh that customers bring in.

I tend to use only Basildon Angling for bits and bait these days, most of the major stuff I buy 2nd hand on ebay.

Also Dave Taffs at Ockendon tackle is very helpful and stocks an enormous range of stuff, considering that it's such a small shop.

I for one never use the shop and i live in ongar !#The reason is very simple they cannot compete in prices for what i want. (i dont need any luggage or rods , reels or clothing .....note they are very competitive on these) .
In the end buyers either walk or use ebay/amazon to buy there gear.( i think our sponsor does advertise on ebay) tackle shops in general have to offer something that the buyer cannot get from ebay. ( good old fashion expectise that means not employing work experence youths who in the main have no experience in shop work and in most cases do not know what a carp rod is))
yes our sponsor runs two good lakes that would persuade buyers to come if they got a discount fishing the lakes ie a free ticket if they spent more than £200.) the cafe there is excellent , very rare for a tackle shop to have a cafe on premises as well as two fairly decent lakes). And get rid of that silly night fishing ticket. do what crow green does and only accept booking on people they know.
Basically birds green owners have it all it just they dont seem to be listening to anglers So they only have themselves to blame if they are loseing customers. would i fish birds green "no" because i am joining a syndicate and rejoining one of my clubs.

Not competative even with our discount???

How do you get experience if you don't start somewhere???? Its called learning is it not!!!

Be interesting to hear a response from the shop regarding your comments that they dont listen & they are not competative....I await there response.

Re 71 swarren yes i do agree they should get experience but with an experienced member of staff not to be let loose in a store while the staff are doing other things. ie dissapearing becauae they could not be bothered.. (i did work experience myself in several stores)
I think i was being very fair on them myself but they are not alone most tackle shops have the same problem.
Yes i would be interested in them answering my idea of getting more people to spend in there shop than somewhere else . Tackle shops are not alone . We are in the middle of a recession and it is difficult situation for all shops now. (whatever they sell even comets ,HMV have all gone broke) Mind yu there problem is mainly due to high staff costs high rates and rents tackle shops is a niche shop (ie they only sell to a niche market) so they have to get thepunters in and buying.

There are no free tickets given out for shop customers. And yes the Cafe is excellent Very Happy Wink

You will find all the staff in Total Tackle's shop very knowledgeable, not only about angling but in the products they sell and always happy to assist. Very Happy

Merry Christmas Razz
