i get the impression v ery little is known about sturgeon in uk lakes.
Probably like this when foreign cats started to be caught here !
I know of only one lake in essex that has these fish (crow green) the biggest i have heard of being caught is around the 45lb (crow green). I just wonder if anyone knows much about the fish. ie catching methods and baits. people i speak too say they dont actually fish for these fish but they tend to catch them by accident looking for cats and pike ,carp. With sizes now moveing towards the 50lbs mark they have a certain attraction to the angler.
Maybe they will replace carp (in the future) as the standard fish to catch. ( its only since private fisheries opened that we got carp being put into the lakes then in recent years cats as well) especially as growth is better than carp and a prettier fish than the cat. Is this the future of fishing?

There is another lake near Dale Farm of all places called Maggits Lake. Large Sturgeon in there, although a lot of the fish have 'dissapeared' by poachers.

I haven't caught one out of there yet, but we went in the summer and a lot were showing.

Best method is tackle up! Heavy line (15lb+), large hook, about a size 4-6 and fish a large piece of luncheon meat on the hook.

apparently you get the slightest of twitches on the buzzer, then all hell breaks out! They really do fight hard!

When returning them, you must open their mouths and push them into the flow of the water hard, this gets them going again.

Hope that helps?

got back from crow green yesterday ,guy there had two over 40 lbs on a piece of mackeral. i found out they will eat anything basically even boilies. I gather they must be treated with the utmost care. this guy has had one of those fish for over 45 mins helping it get back to strength . very impressed what he is doing "well done " mate

sturgeon are a non indigenous species and the EA do not give out licenses for them. They are gradually clamping down on them and are removing them from waters and destroying them.

Get them while you can.

Luncheon meat, fishy boilies, pellets and lumps of fish will all catch sturg. Strong tackle is a must as they are very powerful.

They can take ages to recover, but!!!! if yuo drop them back in the water head first they seem to get a second breath and take off. I have seen it done and it seems to work ok, I have never seen one roll over after this has been done.
Personally I would pop it into a recovery sling and leave it to recover naturally
