i never understand why peps have to cast long distances. when going for big carp. in some lakes there are deep pools in the middle. most carp tend to keep close to the margins. and following the line of the lake esp in average lakes. 9not these 25 acres and over). fishing close to islands (like birds green) always a good idea. the main problem of fishing so close (to your side of ther lake) is offcourse movement . there are ways round this by placeing your bait behind a hedge and drop the bait. and walk the rod to where yu are fishing. certainly within 10 feet of the edge. I reckon 30 feet from the rod is a good place. again useing a loose line with no weights is worth a try. also if possible fish against the wind so the bugs and food moves towards the edges and so the fish will follow the food. baits ! try something unusual for a change esp as the summer is here ??? fruit sweets (soft) banana bits, prawns ?(dipped in strawberry)bread balls dipped in a dip.blackberries raspberrys. again it sounds sense these are the things that woulddrop from a hedge. note we only use halibut and trout pellets because of the oil attracts the fish. boilies are obv they are sweet. But the problem with them is fish have got particular favs of boilies, and useing one particular one would prob not work in any one lake. tuti fruiti strawberrys raspberry. fish flavoured For the summer Luncheon meat is always a good one. (will catch cats aswell). Pop ups i have never used but in a weedy lake these could well work.. is there a killer bait ??? no ! in my opinion. bread will work in all lakes for carp (but attracts roach and rudd) and a great bait for the winter...sweet corn but would not use this particular bait haired or maggots (a total waste of time ) sweet corn is great as a hook bait or as a attraction on the hook with a haired rig.. dog biscuits ( bakers) is good also. if looking for natural baits why not try slugs worms.

maybe when the lake is very pressured then the fish move out, however, i feel that it is only good casting long if you know you are casting to a big bed of bait or there is an underwater feature that you are casting to like a gravel bar. just casting and hoping is not really going to be productive.

Poor flash! I agree with ya mate! Margins are the way forward, the times ive been sitting fishing and a nice fish has surfaced near the margins or sucked in some floating food and most of my fish come from within a few rod lengths of the bank.

and bread is a killer in some places! Theres no better floating bait than bread!

(this isnt sarcasm by the way, margins really can be good and floating bread is brilliant)

the point is very simple fish feed where the food is. offcourse if one throw out 5 kgs of boilies/pellets then they would probably move where the food is !
But would it not be easier to bring in a fish from say 20ft rather than 100 yards (just imagine catching a 30 lb mirror) which of the two are yu likely to break up or loose the fish.. ? My money is on the fish at 100 yards away. then i suppose yu all like to make things difficult for yourselves. some lakes like raphaels yu dont have a choice in the matter.. Regarding night fishing fishing from the margins would certainly bring dividends. Maybe i am trying tell people where to catch fish. but if the advice works ,why complain.. We are all after one fish catch carp the bigger the better and more of them..

You do have some valid ponts Flash , the margins are very under fished because people prefer to bang bivvy pegs and bank sticks in .
I always bait a margin spot and check now and then if fish are active , cockles and worms work well .

Gotta agree with others thou your posts are difficult to read , try and space sentences out please Very Happy

There seems to be so many plus points about fishing the margins (more accurate bait delivery and less tackle etc) but surely on a lake where there are lots of people fishing, moving around, banging pegs in etc, the fish are likely to move into the middle of the lake?

I wish when I was at the lake people would make less noise!

I was at Bird's over the weekend and these two blokes were litterally shouting at each other and I could hear them from the otherside of the lake. There really is no need for that?

'Had anything mate?'

'Nah, :-k all mate - not even a touch'

'Me either'

(maybe if you shut up things would get better)

'Nice bivvie geez, where'd you get that?'

Anyway, I didn't have a very good day on Saturday - first black for ages so maybe it's just sour grapes?

Graham
