In my tackle bag - I know i know, but it's on some nice soft grass.

Is laying Carp in a net on soft grass bad for the fish?

Grass is better than concrete however should use a unhooking mat really.

its not a case of wether it dose the fish harm (it dose more harm than on a mat) its a case of all waters insist on the use of mats for carp all over the contry and they do it for a reason.

Sorry I was being sarcastic.....

It was 9 with the net so I guess about 8 1/2.

They always look much bigger in the flesh thought then on camera. If I looked at that picture I would guess about 6!

It gave me a fair old run around on the light tackle and size 12 hook and when I landed it it had the softest of hook holds that fell out in the net.

One of the advantages of a very soft rod was that I could keep constant and even pressure which is why I think I landed it. I reckon if I had hooked it that way on a carp rod I would have had less fun and it may well have done me.

This fishery is now inundated with polish anglers and I fear they're doing far more harmful things to the carp then laying them on soft grass ..... namely eating them.

Thankfully their tactics are pretty hopeless and I've not seen one of them land one yet.

When I do I'll be keeping my eye on them to make sure they put it straight back!

Mm i agree.. I hate immigrants who dont have the desire to learn and abide by our laws and social rules...

Im with you on this one, anyone, english or not, that i see trying to keep a fish is going to end up swimming with the fish.

Keep an eye out for fixed lines too tied to trees, a favourite tactic of catching fish is for them to tie off a line to a tree or rock with several hooks on it and leave it for a few days.

Obviously don't want to be seen to be trying to stir up any racial hysteria here but I do know that the poles, amongst others like eating carp (especially around xmas).

I went to the fish mongers in my local Morrison's over the festive period and there were two whole mirrors sitting there of around 5lb each.

My eyes nearly fell out and then it clicked.

When you're catching fish to eat then obviously you're playing by a different set of rules which is why the multiple hooks and fixed lines are perhaps legitimate if you're fishing for a food source out of a river but are totally unacceptable in catch and release fishery.

I guess it's all horses for courses. In Australia if you catch a Carp out of a river you HAVE to kill it and can be fined for returning it to the water unharmed.

I was in Adelaide in December and went to the Murray River.....It was absolutely heartbreaking to see double figure carp being caught and killed.

I know they are not native, and they are probably doing more damage than good to the indigenous species, but still not nice to see. Murray cod are special though.

Too true but catching carp from a large water that you are allowed to kill them from is fine so long as its fairly humane. Same as catching trout and salmon and eating them is fine but thats a whole different ball park to going to a lake that is run as day ticket and effectively stealing the fish to eat them.

I think i too would be shocked to see carp on a fish monger stall...didnt know they would even be interested but i guess if there are a lot of poles or eastern Europeans around they must sell fairly well

Did you fish in Adelaide?

The locals often don't target them so it's meant to be easy pickings!

Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Carp in Australia are actaully classed as Vermin, and there are heavy fines if you dont kill what you catch. They constantly are netting the rivers to rid of them cause they are causing all kinds of problems for the local species...yet Perch they love Rolling Eyes
