now im sure i cant be the only angler who beleives and practises using a hooklink which either matches the lb line im using or lower, but reading through a magazine the other day i was suprised at reading this perticular fisherman was using 12lb mainline with 15lb hooklink, the reason given was he was fishing a pretty weedy lake and the extra lb'idge was needed for this reason,i was pretty suprised,if i wanted to beef up me bottom id equally match the mainline, its what i beleive and although i clearly understand the weakest part is the knot surely this isnt normal practice,or is it ??

whad ya think people ?

I think you may be on the wrong forum Embarassed

I can see a degree of logic in increasing hooklink strength in certain circumstances.
If I was fishing heavy weed or over deep silt and I wanted a very long hooklink to aid presentation, for me it would stand to reason that if a fish buries its head in the weed or heads for snags then far more hooklink is available and at risk of damage . I would consider that the tackle nearest the fish is most likely to come into contact with said hazards, and thus fail. The mainline would not necessarily be at any greater risk and may not require additional strength. Also increasing mainline strength may compromise casting distance, which may be crucial.
Generally I'd have to agree with your philosophy of balancing mainline and hooklink strengths though , when carp fishing anyways.
Did the article say if extra long hooklinks were being used ?

i normally use a 20lb or even 25lb coated braid hooklink when fishing weedy/ snaggy lakes with a 12lb mainline.
when fishing over clay or gravel i drop down to a 15lb hooklink, so infact when using coated braids my hooklink is heavier/thicker than my mainline.
if using fluro/mono in winter when all the weed has died down then i'll drop right down to a 8/10lb hooklink.

yes you are right in most circumstances that a hooklink SHOULD be weaker than the mainline....but! Mono has approx 30% stretch so when you are fishing at any range there is a cushioning effect, this allows you to get away with stronger hooklinks when they are required, i.e. fishing in heavy week, over gravel bars etc.
If you balance things up properly and you were to get broken up then it is likely hte knot on the hooklink will part first, if not then the knot on hte other end of the swivel should go so leaving the fish with a very short piece of line anyway.

That does not mean you can use 15lb mainline with a 45lb hooklink though.

As long as the rigs are safe then it shouldn't be too much of a problem

if its coated braid or just plain braided hooklength then its heavyer than mainline in my case other wise i tend to use the same as my mainline to tie hooklengths but this also depends on which rods im useing and what im targeting tbh
